FORGIVENESS

There’s a sweetness in forgiveness like the sunshine after rain,

When all bitterness forgotten, there is harmony again,

While a gentle healing power calms the aching of the soul,

And the simple words, “I’m sorry” help to make the wounded whole.

There’s relief, too, in forgiveness, once the barriers are down,

Making way for love and sharing, for we’re no more on our own,

Since forgotten are the heartache and the hurtful angry word,

And the bonds that had been broken have been once again restored.

To let go of our resentments when we’re aching deep inside

Very often is not easy, for it hurts our wilful pride,

Yet a peace comes with forgiveness that can saturate the soul,

Turning heartache into blessings as we let God take control.

Forgiveness

Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, if my brother keeps on sinning against me, how many times do I have to forgive him? Seven times?"
“ No, not seven times," answered Jesus, “but seventy times seven."
Matthew 18:21-22

God of peace and love, forgive us; we make so many mistakes.
We are truly sorry - sorry for the hurt we may have caused.
Help us to make amends and go forward.
For those who have hurt us, we forgive,
and we ask your blessing on them as we reach out arms of forgiveness.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus, help us as parents to build homes of love, welcome and peace,
where children and teenagers can feel safe and loved and free to be themselves.
A place to return to when the world seems cruel,
a haven when hurt and fear overcome.
A place of refuge when mistakes are made and forgiveness is lovingly given, so together we can all grow,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Joan Blake

VILLANELLE FOR OUR TIME

‘From bitter searching of the heart,

Quickened with passion and with pain,

We rise to play a greater part,

This is the faith from which we start.’

(Song by Leonard Cohen – original poem by Frank Scott)

(Quoted by Julie Nicholson, the priest whose daughter died in the bomb blast on 7th July 2005).

Forgiveness is an essential part of living life to the fullest and in so doing we actually help ourselves as much as those that we are forgiving.

"Instead, be kind to each other, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you."   -Ephesians 4:32 The Bible

“Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the heart and cools the sting.” -William Arthur Ward

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” -Lewis B. Smedes

“I can forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another way of saying, I will not forgive. Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note, torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one.”
-Henry Ward Beecher

“The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbour as ourselves: we do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerant toward others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves.” -Eric Hoffer

“No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.” -Voltaire

“He who forgiveth, and is reconciled unto his enemy, shall receive his reward from God; for he loveth not the unjust doers.” -The Koran

“When you forgive, you in no way change the past - but you sure do change the future.” -Bernard Meltzer

“Forgiveness is almost a selfish act because of its immense benefits to the one who forgives.” -Lawana Blackwell

“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.”
-Catherine Ponder

“In the Bible it says they asked Jesus how many times you should forgive, and he said 70 times 7. Well, I want you all to know that I'm keeping a chart.” -Hillary Rodham Clinton

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” -Mahatma Gandhi

“If you haven't forgiven yourself something, how can you forgive others?” -Dolores Huerta

“Forgiveness is not an emotion, it's a decision.” -Randall Worley

“Once a woman has forgiven her man, she must not reheat his sins for breakfast.” -Marlene Dietrich

“To err is human; to forgive, infrequent.” -Franklin P. Adams

'Tis the most tender part of love, each other to forgive.” -John Sheffield

“The hatred you're carrying is a live coal in your heart, far more damaging to yourself than to them.”

-Lawana Blackwell
