AGM on April 24th 2010 in
Sheffield
|
|
St. Mark's Church,
Report:-
This year's
AGM took place by kind invitation of St Mark's Church, Broomfield Road,
Sheffield. We met upstairs in a comfortable hall at 10.45 for coffee and
registration, followed by a short introduction and our business meeting.
We were pleased that all vacant committee posts have been filled and we
are so grateful for everyone that has agreed to take on different roles of
responsibility and also to those who have worked so hard for Broken
Rites over the last three or four years. We presented our retiring Chair
with flowers and a token.

Bottom row: In the hall and enjoying lunch.
Some ladies from the local Methodist church provided an excellent
lunch downstairs and arranged the chairs attractively in groups.
After lunch, our speaker, The Rev'd Kathy Galloway,
talked about her life and stimulated a great deal of discussion and
interest in her views. She is a well-known writer was Leader of the Iona
Community before becoming Head of Christian Aid in Scotland..
Unfortunately, Bishop Roy Screech was unable to be
with us, so the vicar of St Mark's gave the Blessing before we went home..

Top row: members at the AGM; lunchtime;
Middle row: Lunchtime; Bishop Roy Screech; drama
workshop
Bottom row; Chat Room workshop; Music workshop in the
chapel.
The 26th AGM at Church House, Westminster
After the business part of the day was over, we had over an hour to enjoy
socialising over a lunch of sandwiches, fruit and cake. Then, in the
afternoon, we
divided into four workshops for 1 1/4 hours:-
 | Music and choral singing in the chapel, led by one of our members. |
 | Drama - My Life, my space. Anna Brown used creative movement and
drama to encourage confidence and reflect on our values and seek peace.
Above you see examples of this movement using ribbons and a long
elastic chord. |
 | Voice production about using your voice effectively without
straining. |
 | Chat Room - a chance for members to join in an unstructured chat
with fellow members. |
Finally, we came together and Bishop Roy Screech closed our meeting
with a blessing. We were very pleased that he had been able to join us
during the day and we also welcomed some Bishops' Visitors.

Our Display at General Synod in February

Thank you very much to everyone who supported this
event. Before the AGM there
was our display at The General Synod of the Church of England in February
this year. This seems rather a long time ago now! This was a
worthwhile venture and was an important thing to do to help raise
awareness of our existence.
People did come and
look at the stall, take leaflets and other information and we were able to
talk to Synod members. I am extremely grateful to Christine McMullen for
sponsoring the
display, to Dilys our Associate member on the Committee for organising
this event, and also to her and her family for bringing display stands,
pamphlets, leaflets, books etc. Without them we simply would not have
managed. I am also grateful to some of the London members for staffing
the stall, to Cilla for coming down from York to help, and to Jenny and
her son Julian for the posters. Jenny Dunlop, a Cheshire
Solicitor who has
helped many Broken Rites members is also a member of General Synod and was
very helpful and supportive. |
Our Presence General Synod:-
This is the first time we have arranged a display at
the National Assembly of the Church of England which consists of three
houses of Bishops, Clergy and Laity. They meet two or three times a year.
In February, they were meeting at Church House in Westminster.
We were sponsored by Christine, a member of
General Synod and our display was manned by different members of Broken
Rites over the four days Synod met. It gave us an unique opportunity to
talk to members of Synod and publicize our work.

Residential committee Meeting held at Chester Retreat House in October 2006 BROKEN RITES STALL AT THE METHODIST CHURCH CONFERENCE
Ruth, the Non C of E Rep on the
Committee, has been able to arrange a Broken Rites stall on 7th 8th and
9th July at the Methodist Church Annual Conference to be held in
Scarborough this year.
I think this is a wonderful
new initiative and I am grateful for all Ruth’s hard work which hopefully
will help to raise awareness of the work of Broken Rites in that
denomination. I am sure we will all be interested to have an update in
the next edition of The Rite Lines. |
